THE BREAK

Denim Wetsuit x 1950s/60s Cristobal Balenciaga

This look, based on the abstracted silhouette, is inspired by the construction techniques and innovative volumes created by Cristobal Balenciaga. The sleek yet complex shape achieved through Balenciaga’s cutting and construction methods allowed for women to feel free and unrestricted in their clothing, accommodating for the shift in female silhouette of the time.

The garment aims to bring the influence of Cristobal Balenciaga into a modern perspective through the lense of sportswear. By merging Balenciaga with surf culture,  unrestricted, free volumes are juxtaposed with the constrictive archetype of the wetsuit, echoing the semi-fitted style used often by Balenciaga. The  finishings, closures, and construction techniques further anchor the garment in the archetype of the wetsuit. As a result of this exploration, “The Break” exemplifies a current interpretation of the influence of Cristobal Balenciaga’s work in the modern era, echoing his design language in a world where women movre more freely than ever before.

About

As a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, my heritage has always been a source of inspiration, but it has rarely been represented through a positive/non colonial lens within the fashion industry. In my work, I aim to shine light on the beauty of both Indigenous tradition as well as contemporary Native American culture.
